Armed with their spoons and a sweet tooth, hundreds of staff and employees filed through Pod B of the Cafeteria on September 22 to enjoy icecream sundaes. The event was held to celebrate the hospital's number eight listing in U. S. News and World Report magazine's Honor Roll ofleading hospitals in the country. This is the seventh year in a row that BWH has been ranked as a top 10 hospital by the magazine. As employees received a bowl full of their favorite flavor courtesy of icecream scoopers BWH President Jeff Otten, Chief Operating Officer Matt VanVranken, Marketing and Planning Vice President Vicki Amalfitano, and Vice-President of Surgical Services John Fernandez, among others, the toppings buffet was mobbed with people looking to create the perfect sundae with chocolate sprinkles, granola, strawberries, chocolate sauce, Recees Pieces, whipped cream, nuts, and the topping of all toppings, cherries. "I think it's fantastic that the hospital doesthis for people," said Edna Liperman, a volunteer in Admitting,as she enjoyed her ice cream with just a touch of whipped cream. "It's nice to see so many people come to something like this and enjoythemselves." Gallons of ice cream and frozen yogurt and boxes of cans of whipped cream were carried high above the crowd as organizersmoved constantly to replenish supplies. When not directing traffic orscooping frozen treats, some employees walked around the floor with cans ofwhipped cream to help facilitate the crowd as a line of hungry onlookers snaked through the hallway of thecafeteria and spilled out into the front dinning room. Diane Morris, RN, Operating Room, perhaps best summed up thethoughts of those at the celebration as she surveyed the crowd betweenmouthfuls of frozen yogurt with strawberries when she said, "Thisis really good stuff."
